There has always been a 'darker sleazier
side' to the Medway area - from the war time
dock yard days - when sailors and navy staff
came ashore drinking in the pubs - and where
ever this occurs so does, prostitution! Way
back in Victorian times and before,
Rochester has had it's fair share of
prostitution!
The difference today
though as well as women doing this to feed
themselves, family and their gin drinking -
its now in the main (sad as it is) to feed
their crack and heroin addiction. Perhaps
the most worrying thing is that teenagers
are 'working girls' as young as 13 years
old.
In the main I respect what
they do cause I understand that in some
cases that’s all they can do, and in a
strange obscure way I have become accustomed
to their presence. I wrote this song because
what I find upsetting is that these girls
seem to have little or no childhood/teenage
years to enjoy, grow and progress in life.
JACKSONS FIELDS
I see an old and balding man walk down city way
Walking through the green fields where our children play
Slipping through the dark never making a sound
Looking for something for around forty pound
Only ever see these people by night
Never ever see these people by day
Don't know what he's after
But his just been paid..
(Chorus...)
Who took away all they know?
Do their parents know what they do?
Who took away all they knew?
Turning a trick for a fix
The oldest trade is thriving before or very eyes
Hit teen age years they loose their pride
Police are turning the blind eye code
Don't know their age but they aint that old
(Bridge)
Turning and using the blind eye code
Don't know their age but they aint that old
Every single night along new road
Always there in the warm or cold..
Chorus...
(Bridge)
All along New Road down to Jacksons Fields
Nothing ever changes for the oldest trade
A darker world in Medway you would never know
Just a token gesture of an occasional police raid…
Chorus to End...
